The Testosterone Blood Test measures the level of testosterone, a crucial hormone in both men and women that plays a key role in various bodily functions, including muscle mass, bone density, and mood regulation.

  • Testosterone: Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, but it is also present in females in smaller amounts. It plays a key role in muscle mass, bone density, and libido. Low levels can indicate hypogonadism, aging, or chronic conditions, while high levels may be seen in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or tumours.

  • Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG): SHBG is a protein that binds to sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen, regulating their availability in the body. High or low SHBG levels can affect free hormone levels and are monitored to assess hormonal balance, liver function, or conditions like PCOS and thyroid disorders.

  • Free Androgen Index (FAI): The Free Androgen Index is a calculation used to estimate the amount of free testosterone relative to SHBG. It is a useful marker for evaluating androgen levels, particularly in women with suspected PCOS or men with symptoms of testosterone deficiency.

  • Free Testosterone: Free testosterone is the biologically active form of testosterone not bound to SHBG. It provides a more accurate measure of testosterone availability in the body. Monitoring free testosterone helps diagnose hormonal imbalances, infertility, and conditions like hypogonadism or PCOS.

  • Albumin: Albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood, playing a vital role in maintaining fluid balance and transporting hormones, vitamins, and drugs. Low albumin levels can indicate liver disease, kidney dysfunction, or malnutrition, while high levels are less common but may be seen with dehydration.
